Parents Have The Right To Know if Teacher is Carrying a Concealed Weapon in the Classroom. #2

I read the  editorial in Yesterday's Deseret News "Concealed Carry Permit:  Parents deserve full disclosure" written by Monica Bellenger.  This is cogent. Although by law, teachers are permitted to have concealed weapons,  parents are concerned  because the teachers and faculty refuse to  disclose whether the teachers have a concealed weapon in the classroom.

Monica cited a recent incident where a teacher  at Westlake Elementary had a concealed gun in the restroom and it accidentally fired.  She wasn't injured severally, but it did happen.  The potential firearm in the classroom creates risk to the children.

It's been seventeen years since my youngest was in school high school.  We were never faced with the safety issues children have today.  Other than questioning a teacher's judgement or motives occasionally, my four children's school life was not threatened.  Things are different today.

Over the last several years, distraught parents and communities have dealt with the aftermath of horrifying school shootings around the country.  Children are threatened by irrational individuals who have chosen the classroom as their 'shooting ground'.

Parents have the  responsibility to care and secure the safety of their children. While in school, the parents  intrust teachers and faculty to protect and secure the safety of their children. I think It is imperative parents have the right to know if their child's  teacher has a concealed weapon in the classroom.   It is their right.

  1. Whereas I understand your point of view, I'm not certain I completely agree. I believe teachers are obligated to help maintain the safety of our children. If carrying a gun is what makes the most sense to that teacher then I believe we need to yield to that decision understanding the increased responsibility they have. With the concealed permit requirements, the teacher should be in a trained position to help defend our children. It does frighten me to have more guns in a volatile environment. I agree times certainly have changed.

  2. I know many people who choose to exercise there right to carry a weapon, these are just individuals who by profession are in the education field. However because they are with young people daily there needs to be verification that proper training is received so you don't have guns going off by accident in the school bathroom.
